JoAnn McGrath Women’s Empowerment

About JoAnn McGrath Women’s Empowerment

JoAnn McGrath’s lifelong commitment to helping others formally began in 1957 when she received her nursing degree from Alverno College in Milwaukee. Having grown up in Boston, JoAnn returned home to begin her career. It was here that she met her late husband, David McGrath, jr., who raised her family and ultimately created the Highland Street Foundation.

Her quiet philanthropy has touched hundreds of thousands in the broad areas of health care, housing, youth programming, and access to the arts. But perhaps most personal to JoAnn has been her support of nonprofit organizations that empower women and mothers with the tools to become economically self-sufficient.

As we approach Mother’s Day, Highland Street Foundation is pleased to announce the inaugural launch of the JoAnn McGrath Women’s Empowerment Initiative, created to support organizations that are helping women achieve and sustain economic independence.

This year’s partners include Catholic Charities of Boston, Center for Women & Enterprise, Dress for Success Boston, College of the Desert (CA), and Martha’s Village and Kitchen (CA).
