The Nativity School model came to the attention of the Highland Street trustees nearly 20 years ago when a local newspaper spotlighted a Nativity school program in the greater Boston area. We were attracted to the qualities that make Nativity schools unique: small size and personal attention, values rooted in Jesuit tradition, and intensive complementary resources that include athletics and supportive services to nurture the whole student. Addressing the myriad challenges faced by today's young learners - particularly those faced by struggling learners in multi-ethnic, economically disparate urban centers - requires that organizations like Nativity sustain a long-term, holistic investment in these children and their communities, and that engagement requires support. Working as an early partner with several Nativity schools, the Highland Street Foundation has demonstrated our own commitment to supporting this alternative model, and in turn, the excellence Nativity encourages, teaches, and exudes.
