The Home Funders collaborative is an innovative approach to address the ongoing crisis in affordable housing for very low-income families in Massachusetts. This partnership of private funders operates with a basic belief that a safe and affordable home is the most fundamental need for children and families. Without the foundation of adequate housing, families have an increased risk of not being able to meet their other social, educational, and economic needs.
By pooling private dollars to make low-interest loans and grants, and by collaborating with experienced housing finance programs and local governments, Home Funders supports innovative homeownership and rental projects that provide housing and services for very low-income families. The goal is to integrate families into mixed-income housing environments rather than provide only low-income units.
Home Funders leverages existing housing resources to increase the supply of housing available to the lowest income families in Massachusetts. The project is unique in that it provides developers with access to low-interest and long-term financing, a market incentive, so they can create new housing opportunities.
The Highland Street Foundation trustees are consistently moved by the challenges facing homeless families in Massachusetts. In response, the foundation is one of seven initial investors involved in the creation of Home Funders, and takes pride in its role in launching this extremely successful national model. By joining with the Home Funders partners, the foundation is able to have a more significant impact on helping families and building communities.
